The spellbinding and completely gripping new story of history's forgotten queen - publisher's hyperbole. Far from spellbinding and not at all gripping. This is the second book I've read by this author. She is very knowledgeable about the period, food, clothing, but that's all. There's no story to speak of. No plot. Nothing exciting. No interesting characters. Just nice people living their daily lives in that time frame.I thought maybe the first one, Mistress Cromwell, was a fluke. In that one, I ended up skipping pages but stuck with it thinking something would eventually happen, but nothing ever did. And I can see The Silken Rose is going in the same direction so I'm giving up half way through. Ms. McGrath has all the knowledge to put together a great book, but she needs a plot line to create some excitement (and better character definition). I would have given it one star for interest, but gave three for her expertise of the time period. Thirteenth century life was hard and being a princess/queen had its special problems. This book takes a 13 year old girl princess and shows how she grows to be a queen in a foreign country and learns to rule beside her strong and powerful king husband.I did feel some things were missing. The reader never actually feels what she feels except in a few instances. The moments of grief are few. It is a story, an autobiography, but little emotion. Im looking forward to the next volume, but I wish it would give more personal insights and tell the feelings of the heroine more.
